Know What's In Your Subject Lines That Makes Your Mail Like A Spam

Everyone hates the thought of getting spammed or receiving unsolicited e-mails; This is the main reason why people are always hesitant to give away their e-mail address on the web.  If you’re an online marketer, you should know that you will not be making sales using spam mail marketing.

However, even if it’s not your intention to send spam e-mails, people might confuse your e-mails with spam email marketing.  How? If you will not pay close attention to your subject lines.  Using the wrong subject lines might result to your e-mails getting rejected or flagged by spam filters when they reach your recipient’s inbox.  Furthermore, people might wrongly consider your e-mail as spam if you use subject lines that e-mail spammers often use.

Here are some tips on how to use effective subject lines in your e-mails:

Don’t play it mysterious.  In the past, e-mails with mysterious subject lines arouse curiosity in people.  However, this old trick hardly works anymore.  People have learned that such e-mails bearing mysterious subject lines are often advertisement e-mails and they simply delete them from their inboxes.

Use accurate subject lines.  People often get annoyed when they opened an e-mail with a vague subject and turns out to be an advertisement. Make sure that your subject lines accurately describe the information contained in your e-mail. Don’t disappoint your e-mail subscribers by making false claims in your subject lines.  If your subject line promises a free e-book download, make sure that the e-mail actually contains the link where the recipient can actually download the free e-book.

Don’t use “a call to action” subject lines. Although call-to-action phrases like click here, buy now, see more, may work effectively in banners, they should not be used as e-mail subject lines.   Why?  Because they are obviously advertisement materials.  Spam filters and e-mail recipients usually delete these types of e-mail at once.

Don’t use “we”, “you”, “I” and other personalized words.  Although spam filters may fail to filter out these e-mails because they contain personalize words, recipients usually will not take the time opening them because they already know these e-mails are most often than not, from spammers.  If you really have permission from the recipient to send e-mails, there will be no need for you to use such tricks.

Keep your subject lines simple.  Most e-mail accounts allow subject lines that contain a maximum of 50 characters.  If you go beyond 50 characters, your subject lines will be cut off short which gives your e-mail an unprofessional impression.  A short and simple subject line which describes the true nature of your e-mail is less likely to be filtered out by spam filters.

Don’t use subject lines that sound too marvelous.  If you’re recipient really did not win a prize, then don’t use it as your subject.  Don’t subject lines that contain unbelievable promises.  People have already learned their lesson and have become more wary and suspicious about opening such e-mails.
