Outsourcing can simply be defined as designating certain job
or jobs to an outside firm which is used to be done within the company. Many
companies have been resorting to outsourcing their business functions primarily
to save money, to acquire expertise and assistance from professionals, and to
lessen the company’s workload.
If you are a business owner, particularly of a small or home
based business, is it really a smart move to outsource some jobs? Or is it just
plain laziness to handle your responsibilities? In order to answer the
questions objectively, let’s examine the ins and outs of outsourcing.
First of all, it’s important to take note that outsourcing
business functions has long been a practice for many large corporations. Today,
more and more home based and small businesses are following that course, and
with good reasons. Studies show that outsourcing a business function, when
handled efficiently generates productive results. It has been proven to bring
significant amounts of financial savings, and more importantly, it is one of
the major contributing factors to a company’s high-efficiency and success.
Which functions of businesses are generally outsourced? The
two major fields of business outsourcing are business processing and outsourcing
information systems. These two major fields are divided into various categories
such as marketing, web developing, customer service, manufacturing, packaging,
training, accounting and other business tasks.
A small business or a home based business owner might feel
overwhelmed of handling too many business tasks all by himself. It is also very
likely that he may not be well-equipped in all areas of the business. He might
need to acquire professional skills to ensure that the tasks are performed
well. Furthermore, it might be necessary to obtain additional workers to get
some jobs done on time.
Given these situations, hiring more in-house staff can be
very expensive. Costs of hiring, training and leasing a working space, and
paying a regular salary for more employees can exceed the budget. Therefore,
choosing to outsource some of the tasks that need assistance would be a wise
decision. Another great advantage of outsourcing is that you as the manager can
devote more time to tasks that involve improving your customer relations.
One important thing to remember when choosing to outsource
is for you to have enough knowledge and preparation about the process before
actually jumping in. Do more research on how to manage outsourced jobs
effectively. Although you are handing over a particular task to an outsourcer,
you must be able to maintain control over these jobs at all times. To achieve
this, it is crucial to establish open communications between you and your
outsourcing partner all through out the project. Learning how to set up team
work with your outsourcer is the key. Needless to say, finding an outsourcing
partner who is capable and reliable will help you succeed in your outsourcing
endeavors.
So, is it smart to outsource?
It would depend on your
situation, but I think it’s safe to say that there’s nothing lazy about it.
